  • Paljud turuosalised peavad Citigroupi (C) maailma tähtsamaks aktsiaks. Seda just selles mõttes, et Citi võib kogu turgu suunata. Citi on suurima osakaaluga aktsia (10.8%) S%P Finantsindeksis ning finantssektor on suurima osakaaluga S&P 500-s (21%), seega see mõttekäik on täisa õige.

Eile tõusis Citi uue tipu juurde ning seda keskmisest suurema käibega. Võib kogu turgu kaasa vedada. Mina hoian igatahes suht tihedalt reeglina C-l silma peal, seda enam täna.

    Stay Aware of Holiday-Related Volatility
    12/23/04 8:53 AM ET

Happiness consists more in small conveniences of pleasures that occur every day than in great pieces of good fortune that happen but seldom to a man in the course of his life.

    -- Benjamin Franklin

Now through the end of the year, we are in the blissful period of time when worries and concerns are set aside and we spend time enjoying family, friends and the pleasures of the holiday season. The stock market often has an upward bias during this period as the good feelings of the season and business reasons for a strong finish to the year conspire together to keep the market elevated.

A lot of institutions and big funds have already wrapped up their year. They have made their big moves and have started positioning for 2005. They are on the sidelines, and that leaves the day-to-day action in the hands of folks with much shorter time frames.

If you are trading during the holiday period, keep in mind the tendency toward a positive bias, but also stay aware that thin trading often produces unusual volatility. It is very easy for stocks to be moved around randomly. Sometimes the swings are just random, while other times they are caused by folks who are trying to take advantage of the environment.

Trading can be very lucrative during the holiday periods if you act aggressively and are prepared to move quickly. Typically, it is not a good time to build long-term positions, but there often are some substantial pricing inefficiencies that can offer very good opportunities. The fact that so many folks are distracted by the holidays makes the environment even more conducive for traders who are willing to stay focused on the action.

We have a lot of economic data on the wires this morning. The market reaction was slightly negative to mostly in-line reports, except for Durable Goods, which was better than expected. The dollar is struggling to start the day, and I'm going to take a look at some gold stocks to see how they are setting up. They have been weak lately and I want to see if they are offering any good entry points.

Oil is going to be important once again and is trading down slightly below the $44 level. Futures are flat, while European markets were mostly higher and Japan was closed for the birthday of the Emperor.

I'm running way behind. I'll be back later with an update.
