Protect Capital and Recent Gains Here
    9/28/2005 9:02 AM EDT

Sure I am of this, that you have only to endure to conquer. You have only to persevere to save yourselves.

    -- Winston Churchill

As we seek out new investing and trading ideas each day, it is very easy to forget that our ultimate goal is to be in the market for the very long haul. We need to persist and endure through the ups and downs. We are going to become tired of a plodding, cautious approach at times and will be tempted to take on a high level of risk and go for the home run, but if we keep in mind how important it is to stay in the game, we can build the resolve to not throw caution to the wind.

We are in a particularly difficult market environment right now, and it is more important than usual to not let frustration or impatience drive us to taking on unacceptable amounts of risk. The secret to success in the market is to endure the hard times so that we can be well-positioned to prosper in the good times.

The dilemma of the market at the moment is that although we have a slew of negatives to consider and the indices are in a precarious technical position, we are still holding up well enough that we are tempted to shrug off the calls for a pessimistic approach and put our capital to work.

An additional source of confusion is that even though we have had poor breadth lately, there still seems to be a fairly good supply of individual stocks that are acting well. There are trades to be had and it isn't hard to put capital to work, if you so desire.

But now more than usual, it is very important that we be active in protecting capital and recent gains. This is an environment were it is very easy to let account balances slip, if you get caught by a sudden bout of market volatility. It is very important to keep stops tight and not let things slip lower. If the market begins to act poorly, then we must be prepared to move fast and hang tough while things shake out.

What makes this market particularly difficult right now is that although the negatives are pervasive, there still is enough positive action to appease the bulls and keep them hopeful. We have end-of-the-quarter window-dressing kicking in, which is also going to have some impact in various places.

If you struggle with how to approach the current market, keep it firmly in mind that your ultimate goal isn't to make money today, but to be in good position to make money for the next 30 years. Focus on endurance and perseverance, and success will ultimately be yours.

We have an upbeat market in the early going. Durable goods jumped big and were well over consensus levels. That is good news for the economy, but not so good if we are hoping for a less hawkish Fed.

Oil is up, gold is up, the dollar is up, foreign markets are up and futures are up. One thing I can guarantee is that things will change. I'll be looking to do some selling into a strong open this morning.
