  • Gaming What Could Be a Tricky Week

"Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than what people do or say. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill."

    -- Charles Swindoll

A barrage of earnings reports hits the market this week and that will be our primary driving force. Whether they prove to be a positive catalyst or a negative one will depend not on the numbers so much as the attitude of the market. Stocks with good reports can be hit hard with selling if market participants are overly optimistic while stocks with mediocre reports can do well if expectations are low and the attitude forgiving.

The kickoff comes on Tuesday, when Amgen (AMGN: Nasdaq) AMGN), Motorola (NYSE: MOT), Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) and Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) report. Then on Wednesday we hear from Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) and Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) and finally on Thursday it is Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) that will be the primary focus. Most of the stocks making up the Dow, S&P 100 and Nasdaq 100 stocks will report in the next two weeks while smaller-cap stocks tend to be much more spread out.

With the indices close to multiyear highs the big question is whether we are setting up for a sell the news reaction to even good reports. To complicate matters further, the idea that this rally is getting old and that we are due for a severe correction seems to be widely embraced. The Wall Street Journal has an article this morning headlined, "Do Stocks Have Any Zip Left"? Even those folks who are extremely bullish seem to have a sense of foreboding about what is about to hit.

Given oil at $70, gold at $600, a struggling real estate market, a hawkish Fed and a market that hasn't had a sharp correction in a while, can we really expect that the attitude of market participants will be sufficiently upbeat to drive us higher as earnings reports unfold? It is going to be tough but given the soft confidence and the flaccid bullishness we do have the potential for some surprise to the upside if companies are upbeat.
