  • FEDi intressimäärade tõstmise otsuse eel on turg avanemas napis plussis ca 0,10-0,20%.

Lexar Media (LEXR) andis eile peale turu sulgemist käibehoiatuse: konsensuse oodatud 186M USD asemel nähakse II kvartali käivet tulevat vaid 155-160M USD kanti. Aktsia eelturul -16%.

Research in Motion (RIMM) eile peale turu sulgemist avaldatud head tulemused oli peale PalmOne edu juba oodatud, kuid aktsia on sellest hoolimata eelturul +10% tõusnud kui ettevõte kergitas ka kahe järgneva kvartali prognoose.

If the FOMC does anything other than raise interest rates by a quarter point this afternoon, it will come as quite a surprise to the market. There are times when the market is uncertain about what Alan Greenspan and the boys might do, but this isn't one of those times. The members of the Fed have prepared the market very carefully for an increase, and they are most likely going to stick to the script.

The statement that accompanies the interest rate decision holds the potential for some surprise, but it seems likely that the current theme of a "measured approach" to tightening will continue.

The question for us today isn't what the FOMC will say or do, but how the market will react. It would seem that such a highly anticipated event is already fully priced into the market, but there are market participants, especially big conservative funds, who will wait for the decision before acting. There are also those who want to see how others react, if at all, before they make their move.

We are set up for the FOMC interest rate decision to be a major nonevent, but if the market is looking for an excuse to do something, this is still a good one. The best thing about the Fed move today is that we can stop hearing and talking about it for a day or two. Of course, the next interest rate hike will soon be a major topic of conversation.

Yesterday, the bulls pulled off a minor bounce back from the minor selloff the prior day. We have been sitting in a trading range for a while now, and we are in good shape for an upward move if the bulls can increase their intensity a bit.

One of the positives lately has been increased speculative action in some of the more volatile big-cap stocks, such as Qualcomm (QCOM:Nasdaq), Broadcom (BRCM:Nasdaq), KLA-Tencor (KLAC:Nasdaq), eBay (EBAY:Nasdaq), Yahoo! (YHOO:Nasdaq), etc. When these stocks are active, it is a sign that fund managers are trying to find ways to kick-start their performance stats. This may be a function of end-of-the-quarter window dressing to some extent, but we definitely have to see if this is a trend that is building.

After the FOMC decision at 2:15 p.m. EDT, the focus of the market is likely to shift to earnings reports, which start in earnest next week. That is what is going to determine the direction of this market in the short term. There are some promising signs, like the strong report from Research in Motion (RIMM:Nasdaq) last night, which the traders are buying this morning.

For now we have a healthier trading environment, but a trend move is likely to begin as earnings season and the accompanying guidance impacts the market.

We have a slightly positive start to the day. Overseas markets inched up. The dollar is mixed and oil and gold are trading up. In addition to the FOMC at 2:15 p.m., we have Chicago PMI at 10 a.m. this morning, which may be cause for a blip or two on the radar screens.

  • Numbrist olulisemad on FED kommentaarid tuleviku suhtes ...

The Committee perceives the upside and downside risks to the attainment of both sustainable growth and price stability for the next few quarters are roughly equal. With underlying inflation still expected to be relatively low, the Committee believes that policy accommodation can be removed at a pace that is likely to be measured. Nonetheless, the Committee will respond to changes in economic prospects as needed to fulfill its obligation to maintain price stability.
