We knew Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) was powerful, but maybe we didn't realize just how much. The first full trailer for Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina season 2, out April 5, dropped recently, and it reveals a little bit of just how far Sabrina will go this season. No longer the fledgling witch of season 1, Sabrina has now claimed her full power by signing the Book of the Beast, and is going to The Academy of Unseen Arts full time. Back in December we got a teaser trailer, with the same killer "Cherry Bomb" track - a Joan Jett and the Blackhearts cover of the Runaways song. The new trailer has most of the same footage as the last, plus so. much. more.
Sabrina's clearly not the same since her dark baptism, and even Aunt Hilda (Lucy Davis) is worried about it. While Sabrina has always had quite the moral conscience, we've also seen her be be downright vindictive when either she or people she cares about are threatened. How much will that intensify now that she's pledged herself to Satan? "It's like I've been walking down this darker path, but maybe it's not so bad" Sabrina says unconvincingly in the trailer.
Sabrina's not just opening herself up to more options magically, but romantically as well. Since Sabrina broke up with Harvey (Ross Lynch) in the season 1 finale, she's a free agent now. The trailer shows quite a few steamy moments between Sabrina and fellow (gorgeous) student Nick (Gavin Leatherwood). Perhaps she's not quite done with Harvey though, as also we see her and Harvey getting it on for a moment. Sabrina and Harvey's romance in season 1 was sweet puppy love, but as season 2 seems to be ratcheting everything far up, Sabrina enjoying her darker, sluttier side makes a lot of sense, and is, frankly, a lot more fun.
Speaking of Harvey and Nick, there's a scene in the trailer where they both stand armed, looking ready to follow Sabrina's orders. Whatever is going on, it must be damn serious for these two to work together. This isn't the only time we see various characters armed for battle in the trailer. Nick holds a bloody axe as he and Sabrina walk through the woods. Susie (Lachlan Watson - with a buzzed head?) is even holding a shotgun at some point with Harvey by her side. It seems there's a battle raging, and everyone's involved in the fight.
And if there is a fight, just which side is Sabrina on? The opening scene of the trailer shows Sabrina walking through the halls of her old school, Baxter High, and spilling gasoline on the floor, and lighting a match. It sets the tone for the trailer, and teases untold darkness for Sabrina's path. Even Father Blackwood (Richard Coyle) seems to be both afraid and impressed. "We've heard reports of levitation," he says in the trailer. "A slaughter of demons, resurrection of witches. How does a first year, half mortal student manage that?" Sabrina is obviously quite beyond your standard witch. In one of the trailer's final shots, Sabrina hovers above an awed and fearful crowd, broom in hand, while Harvey calls her name from below. "I feel I must warn you," she says. "This is who I am." Maybe we should listen to her.
The final scene is, perhaps, the most telling of all. Throughout season 1 and the holiday special, whenever we see Satan, he takes the form of a beast. However, this time it actually looks like he's in the form of a man, as he and Sabrina finally sit down to have a chat. "You have loved the power I have given you," he says. Sabrina responds with the pivotal question, "What is it you want from me?" That's what we'd all like to know. Clearly the devil has big plans for Sabrina Spellman, and he's only just getting started.
