Look no further than Intel (INTC) if you want to see psychology trump any other variable in this stock market -- at least for the short term.
Traders who tried to game Intel couldn't do it without first assessing the gloom component. If we switch metaphors for a second, it all becomes clear: People figured that Intel would lose this midquarter update by a touchdown. Instead it lost by a field goal. Those who took the points won. But those who take Intel outright, of course, lose.
In some ways our whole business of trading has become like football games, where you have to figure the psychological line out first. Why? Because the simple truth is, any way you cut it, right now Intel is a loser to own outright. But at a given moment, there are so many people who know it is a loser that it pays to game it the other way, take the points and make the bucks.
It wasn't always like this. For the longest time Intel was a clean win, with or without the points. That's because we weren't saturated with personal computers and we needed more power for all the fancy devices associated with personal computers, everything from games to better email to the Web in general.
That was then, this is now. Intel looks a lot like Alcoa (AA) to me. Things are bad for Intel, but not so bad that it can't bounce first before it goes back to going nowhere except, subtly, down.
That's OK. There are 10,000 other stocks out there. It's just that we tend to forget them any time Intel opens its huge, midquarterly mouth.
