How Not to Get Trampled in This Stampede

Yesterday's rally was one of the most powerful we have seen in nearly a year. The major indices all made large point gains, on excellent breadth and increased volume. Although we didn't make new highs in the DJIA, S&P 500 or Nasdaq, we are within spitting distance.The obvious catalyst for the move was a comment in the FOMC meeting minutes that there actually may be an end in sight for the rate hikes and in fact some of the members are actually worried that they may go too far. Of course, no promises were made and future economic data are going to have an impact but the simple fact that they even talked about an end to rate increases was enough to excite market participants.
The good news continues this morning with strong earnings reports from Texas Instruments (TXN:NYSE) and Yahoo! (YHOO:Nasdaq). Motorola (MOT:Nasdaq) and Seagate (STX:NYSE) were not nearly as strong but we seeing a robust open on top of yesterday's already outsized gains.
Whenever we are faced with this degree of market strength there are certain traders who immediately start looking for a top. They are distrustful of this sort of exuberance and expect it to end quickly and badly. Sometimes they are right and catch a pullback but more often than not a strong market stays stronger longer than is expected.
Respect the strength and don't be too quick to look for it to come to a quick halt. On the other hand, make sure you don't let your emotions get out of hand. It's very easy to be sucked into the excitement of a hot market and to set aside your discipline and engage in trading tactics you normally wouldn't.
