Watch Your Time Frames

In the current market environment, the key to success is being aware of your time frames. When the market is in a strong uptrend like we had from October 2005 until just recently, you can be lax about your holding periods. The trend is up, so you just sit back and ride it.Now that we have seen some severe technical damage to the uptrend, it is much more important to focus on your time frames -- you can't trust in a rising market to lift all stocks at this point.
Many market players are looking for a bounce after the shellacking in recent days. We are due for one but it is extremely important to watch your time frames if you are going to try to play a recovery. It is downright foolish to believe that the market is going to do a U or V turn and head straight back up to recent highs. If you are buying with that idea in mind, you are very likely to be disappointed. On the other hand, if you keep your time frame short and expect a technical bounce to be brief, you have a much better chance of making some good trades.
The intermediate-term trend is undergoing some change. That doesn't mean there are no short-term opportunities, but you must be more careful that usual about letting your time frames slip if a trade doesn't work out. Too often, market players let a quick trade turn into a longer-term investment. In a market that is rolling over, that can be extremely dangerous.
There is going to be a lot of talk about a bounce given how oversold the market has become. Don't assume that a bounce means a recovery. It is simply the nature of markets not to go straight up or down and if your time frame is short enough you can try to profit from that. So make sure your time frame is foremost in your mind as you ponder this market. We are due for some sort of bounce but the smart bet is that it won't last for long.
