    The Rotation Checklist

"Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better."

    -- King Whitney, Jr.

The severe selloff in oil, gold, steel and a variety of commodity-related stocks yesterday, and some positive action in Cisco this morning despite an average earnings report, raises the question of whether the market is ripe for a rotation. Big-cap stocks, technology in particular, have been very weak since Yahoo! and Intel kicked off the earnings season with poor reports. Many of the big boys have been trending straight down for weeks now with nary a bounce. Are market participants ready to start moving cash from the highflying cyclical and commodity stocks and start bottom fishing some big stocks.

There has also been talk for years that the outperformance of small-caps is about to end and that big-caps will finally start showing better relative strength. However, good small-caps will always outperform good big-caps so I'm not looking to load up on stocks like Microsoft and General Electric, but if big-caps do start to come back into favor it may help accelerate rotation into a new group of leaders.

We have been hearing about the potential for a "technology rally" for at least six months but with all of the momentum money focused on oil, gold, steel, commodities and cyclicals, there just hasn't been enough sustained interest to get the momentum moving. I'm not saying that a rotation into technology is at hand, but the conditions for that to occur are fairly good and that means we have to focus on the possibilities. A change of this sort offers great opportunity if we can catch it as it begins to emerge.
